Hilario Antonio Rodríguez: un spanish negro de La Habana en la Nueva York colonial (1746-c. 1757)

A partir de la documentación, escasa y semidestruida, del caso del joven cubano Hilario Antonio Rodríguez, resguardada en el Archivo Estatal de Nueva York, el artículo saca a la luz la presencia de los llamados Spanish negroes en la Nueva York colonial, en particular, a mediados del siglo XVIII. Se demuestra que las empresas corsarias de Gran Bretaña y España y las guerras entre las dos naciones explican las circunstancias violentas de la llegada de Rodríguez y de otros negros, mulatos e indígenas del Caribe hispánico a la ciudad de habla inglesa. Se expone la esclavitud ilegal del adolescente, los oficios que desempeñó en este estado, los amos que tuvo, los lugares donde vivió y los intentos legales de recuperar la libertad para regresar a La Habana.
