Popular sanctification of the dead in Colombian urban cemeteries

This article is an analysis of ritual discourses and practices concerning the phenomenon of popular sanctification of some the dead in urban grave-yards of Colombia. Field-work on this topic has been initiated in 1996, in various Colombian grave-yards, even though this presentation revolves around the central Cemetery of Bogota. The purpose of this text is to show that the implied beliefs, inasmuch as they are symbolic processes tied to specific determined social problems, must be understood as manifesting “symbolic efficacy”, in a language, both religious and political. Thus, when the members of a society torn apart with permanent conflicts bring out of oblivion the true victims of this multiform violence, converting them into “popular saints”, a new kind of civil identity is recognized and constructed, through a collective counter-memory of recent national history.
