From the vegetable to the human: an Afro-Colombian cognitive model of the Pacific

Abstract

The Colombians of african origin who inhabit the Pacific coast have a thought system which structures different areas of reality and the relationships between them along various classificatory axes. This article attempts to demonstrate that the paradigm of the vegetable world plays a central part in concepts connected with the links and boundaries between Nature and Culture. The vegetable world is a metaphor around which are articulated the other components in the structure of the universe and of the world of human beings. Far from being a rigid binary system, afro-colombian cosmology is characterised by a logic of fragmentation, a fluid and subtle intellectual strategy which finds a place for  many gradations and nuances between the opposite poles.
