Geographic information systems and their application in Archaeology

The potential use of Geographic lnformation Systems (GIS) in archaeology has demonstrated that research in this field can be addressed in more sophisticated way. GIS applications in archaeology are used to assess the relationship between archaeological sites and the regional environment. Data is gathered through digitalizing maps (elevation, hydrology, geology, soils, vegetation, archaeology, etcetera), scanning, using GPS and remote sensing (via satellite or aerial photography).
