Resumen

El trabajo de terreno sobre el cual se basa este artículo fue realizado como parte del programa de estudios afro-americanos de la Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois (USA), bajo el patrocinio de la Grace & Henry Doherty Foundation de Nueva York y últimamente del Instituto Colombiano de Antropología. El autor expresa su agradecimiento al Profesor G. Reichel-Dolmatoff por la ayuda prestada en la traducción del original y a éste y al Profesor León Helguera de la Universidad de North Carolina, por haber llamado su atención acerca de documentos históricos tan necesarios para la comprensión de la vida actual de la isla.
